If this is your first time to rent a car or a truck from companies like U-Haul, you must know by now that you will need some crucial documents. You can’t just simply rent a car without proving who you are. Car rental companies don’t really trust people by sight.
So, before you can rent a car or a truck, do yourself a favor and prepare these documents and IDs in advance:
- A valid driver’s license. If you’re in the US and you’re an American, you should have had your driver’s license at least for 2 years now. Even if you’re past 25 years of age, renting a car may not be possible if you just learned how to drive the past year.
- Passport. You’ll also need this, if you’re renting a car in another country. You’ll then need your 2-year-old license too. However, in some countries they may ask for your International Driver’s Permit instead. Keep in mind that many car rental companies require that you have the same name in your passport and driver’s license (and in your other cards too).
- Credit card. You really can’t deal with strictly cash when you’re renting a car. You’ll need the credit card so you can make your security deposit. To make this work, the credit card must have enough funds to cover the cost of the security deposit. Also, the credit card must bear the same name as the renter.
With these IDs and documents, you’re good to go. Just keep in mind that there may still be age requirements. It can be a problem if you’re not yet 25 years old. You may still be able to rent a car, but you may have to pay the extra “young renter’s fee”.
