Don’t wait for August to come around before you start planning for you college move! With the myriad of things that you have to attend to in the days before and after it, you will benefit from early planning. You should start with determining the things that you should pack now and lessen your stress in the future.
Think Twice About Furniture
You may be attached to your bedroom furniture but it isn’t a valid reason to move everything! You should only bring the essentials, especially when you’re moving into university housing (i.e., dormitories). Even when you’re moving into an off-campus accommodation, you should avoid bringing along furniture in the U-Haul truck because then it may not fit well into the space.
If you must bring furniture, then you should stick to small, foldable pieces like Ikea-style tables and chairs or beanbag chairs. You can use the space in the truck for other more important items, as well as buy additional furniture when you’re already in your new place.
Think About Changes in Lifestyle
Technology will definitely change the must-bring items for college students. You will likely find it unnecessary to bring a jar of change for coin-operated laundry because many machines now accept credit and debit card readers. You may also bring along your laptop and printer so that you can avail of the wireless services on campus.
Your new life as a college student will also mean changes in your lifestyle, meals-wise. You may want to bring a small fridge and a microwave for those days and nights when fast and easy meals are necessary; check with your roommate so there’s no duplication.
You should also look into your mode of transportation, especially when you live in a large campus. You have to find room, for example, for your bike or skateboard in the moving truck.
Many college housing also doesn’t provide air-conditioning so bringing an electric fan makes sense. You have to consider the climate, too, so you can pack appropriate clothes instead of buying them in your new place. You will have new friends to meet, new subjects to familiarize yourself with, and new schedules to deal with so buying clothes will be last on your list.
Be sure to check that the things you pack into the moving truck can also be carried up the stairs on your own or with the assistance of another person. Even when your accommodation has an elevator, the lines may be long so it’s often best to just take the stairs.
